thru September 21 - Oil Paintings by Luke Allsbrook - Opening Friday, May 23 and continuing through Sunday, September 21, 2008, the Arboretum will host a landscape painting exhibit by internationally known artist Luke Allsbrook in the Baker Exhibit Center. The exhibit is titled "Our Precious Land: Visions and Scenes of North Carolina" and presents oil paintings on canvas that reflect the beauty of farmland across the mountain region and other natural and created landscapes. thru August 9 - Guided Hikes at Bat Cave Preserve - Wednesdays and Saturdays only, 10:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. Hikes take about two hours. Reservations are required in advance to attend a hike. To make a reservation, call The Nature Conservancy’s Mountains Office at (828) 350-1431 and select "Option 4" or email Mtn_Volunteers@tnc.org. Leave your name, phone number, the date and time of the hike you would like to register for, and the number of slots that you would like to reserve. We will send you confirmation of your reservation. The hikes cost $10 per person, $5 for children under 12, and no charge for children being carried.

thru August 16 - “Unto These Hills…a retelling” - Mountainside Theatre (7:30 p.m. nightly except Sundays) Contact: Cherokee Historical Association Box Office (828) 497-2111 “Unto These Hills” debuted on July 1, 1950 and was in instant hit. The drama has shown at the open-air Mountainside Theatre each summer since then when Kermit Hunter, a non-Native, wrote the original version as a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A new version that debuted last year adopted a Cherokee perspective of the Eastern Band’s own history and included authentic costumes, traditional dance and music and – for the first time ever – a majority of Cherokee actors. Attendance rose last season and audiences gave the revised show a standing ovation after each performance. Over the decades, more than five million people have experienced this memorable outdoor drama.

July 7 - Bandana Klezmer with Jibblin' the Froeline - Concerts on the Quad is fun for the entire family. The public is invited to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs. Sorry, no pets allowed. With nearly 2,000 people attending each concert, lawn-chair seating will be separate from blanket seating in order to preserve sight lines; please look for signage when arriving on the Quad. Check the Café a la Quad tent for snacks and beverages from 6 to 8 p.m. In case of rain, the concerts will be held in Lipinsky Auditorium. A limited menu will be served on rainy evenings. Concert location decisions are made at 5 p.m. the day of the show. July 8 - Docent Training - Smith-McDowell House Museum will host a series of Museum Guide training sessions throughout 2008. Docents assist museum visitors, work with group tours, and may lead special guided tours. The Museum is seeking community members of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in history and working with the public. Along with our Adult Docent Program the Museum does have a Jr. Docent Program for students ages 12-18, and are hoping to expand both programs through these training sessions. Volunteers will receive in-depth training on the history and architecture of Smith-McDowell House, as well as upcoming events and exhibits at the Museum.
