Muddy Sneakers Program Gets Kids in the Woods

You don’t have to have muddy sneakers to be a Muddy Sneaker, but there is at least a chance that the shoes you’re wearing may get wet! This new non-profit is giving elementary students valuable outdoor learning experiences in places like DuPont State Forest and Pisgah National Forest.

Muddy Sneakers is beginning its first full operational year as a partner with participating public schools in the western North Carolina counties of Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe, and Jackson. Through the academic year, the program will serve 11 schools and upwards of 100 students a day. The linked curriculum ties directly to North Carolina’s Science Course of Study.

Muddy Sneakers’ 12-day-per-year structure, its commitment to partnering with classroom teachers, its small group nature (12 students per instructor team) and its emphasis on establishing a model of excellence make it radically unique. The aim is to build life-long bonds between “Sneaker kids” and nature while directly impacting classroom performance in very real, trackable ways.

You are enthusiastically invited to become a program volunteer, a parent-in-the-field, a liaison in building new school partnerships and/or a donor who can make an immediate difference with a tax-deductible contribution.

Muddy Sneakers is generously supported by its own board and staff, philanthropic organizations, participation-based school fees, and gifts from people like you.
