Chairs Sought for Scientific Wildlife Councils

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Nongame Wildlife Advisory Committee is soliciting applications for the position of chair for each of the state’s six scientific councils — mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, freshwater fishes, freshwater and terrestrial mollusks, and freshwater and terrestrial crustaceans.

The scientific councils are responsible for updating the listings of legal protection status of the endangered, threatened and special concern species included in each taxonomic group. Scientific councils typically have five to 10 members and may include representatives from adjacent states.

Council chairs will have broad latitude in building a team of experts who have demonstrated statewide taxonomic knowledge in North Carolina and adjacent regions. Responsibilities of chairs include:

  • Convening the full scientific council in a timely manner
  • Ensuring that each council member contributes in all deliberations
  • Keeping the council on task so that deadlines are met
  • Submitting a final report in a standardized format
Individuals with strong interpersonal skills, the ability to build and lead a team, and a commitment to meet deadlines and follow format guidelines are encouraged to apply for the volunteer position of each scientific council chair.

Applications are available here. Applicants should attach a recent curriculum vitae to the application and send both to Carol Price, wildlife diversity biologist. Electronic submissions are preferred carol.price@ncwildlife.org, but hard copies can be mailed to the Nongame and Wildlife Advisory Committee, Attn: Carol Price, Division of Inland Fisheries, MSC 1721, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1721.
